Lead Technical Manager - Tax Practice & Ethics

SUMMARY
The Lead Technical Manager – Taxation is responsible for serving as a tax subject matter expert for the Institute. This position will also develop and/or review technical tax content, manage a Tax Division committee and/or task force, assist with tax-related webcasts and conferences, and perform other technical duties as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as the staff liaison for one Tax Division committee and any related task forces and/or special projects, including management and tracking of budgeted expenses.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on the AICPA:
    • Perform technical and editorial reviews on resources, articles, newsletters, web copy, and other content.
    • Develop issues, briefs and talking points for hot topics or target issues for designated area (e.g., individual income taxation, tax compliance, etc.) and provide updates for Team, volunteers and/or other AICPA staff, as requested.
    • Write, edit, review and others support development of technical resources for members, including tax ethics, tax practice standards, tax related workflow and tax practice management.
    • Provide technical guidance, review and input on the development of tax-related communications efforts for both the AICPA and Tax Section membership; collaborate with the Communications staff as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of tax return deadlines and the tax practitioner business cycle, monitor for rapidly changing issues and tracks hot topics to anticipate the need to initiate a rapid-response plan to keep members and impacted AICPA teams up to date on fast moving issues.
  • Manage web content for at least one resource landing page (e.g., Tax Compliance, Tax Planning, etc.) within the tax interest area, including maintaining and developing content. 
  • Oversee and/or contribute to the webcast productions for the Taxation team, including recommending speakers & topics, developing content, developing marketing copy, as well as producing, moderating and/or presenting.
  • Manage projects, resources and volunteers for the Taxation team; apprise leadership and team members of status and risks.
  • Write articles and blogs AICPA publications, blog and Tax Section member communications. 
  • Foster communication and cooperation between the Taxation Team and the rest of the organization, which includes supporting AICPA initiatives, reaching out to and partnering with other AICPA teams, interacting with state societies and outside organizations
  • Serve as a team liaison for at least one other AICPA team (e.g., PCPS, Student & Academic Affairs, etc.). 
  • Stay abreast of developments in the profession, tax industry and taxation.
    • Provide ongoing input “Tax Radar” that Taxation Team uses to continually scans for changes in trending issues and topics to assess importance and inform recommendations for: 1) new member resources, articles, blogs and tools; 2) serve as a basis for updating the Tax Portfolio Key Interest Areas; or, 3) shift project priorities, communications strategies, and Tax Section marketing messaging.
    • Anticipate looming deadlines, monitor for rapidly changing hot topics and track top issues (Tier 1 and Tier 2) to anticipate the need to special member e-Alerts.
    • Keep members informed of significant changes to IRS administrative procedure and regulatory guidance, trending issues, hot topics and stay up to date on AICPA tax advocacy initiatives.
  • Monitor AICPA’s efforts to promote CPAs as the premier providers of tax services and regularly check for alignment with communications messaging and resource development plans.
  • Respond to tax-related member inquiries & media requests.
  • Contribute to the planning and development of a tax-related conference(s) as either a member of planning committee or as a team liaison to the planning committee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Strong Tax Technical Knowledge (CPA required, with at least 6 years of experience)
  • Strong project management skills with proven ability to coordinate multiple projects
  • Strong communications skills  (e.g., speaks and writes clearly and confidently, able to give and receive input, build consensus, asks questions, cooperates with others regardless of level, team or position)
  • Entrepreneurial mindset (e.g., results oriented, can work independently, make decisions, and think strategically with a focus on finding the right solution, not just completing a task or “doing whatever we did last year”)
  • Commitment to and passion for serving the profession (e.g., customer service orientation, inclination to be of service to others, understands needs of internal & external stakeholders and members)

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Minimum of 6 years of related experience
 
EDUCATION REQUIRED
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Masters in Taxation, or law degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Active CPA license
 
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION PREFERRED
